Rema

Afrorave is the evolution. Oslo's after-hours crowd is ready.

Artist briefing

Rema is the clearest evidence that Afrobeats is not a fixed genre but an ongoing evolution. Afrorave — the sound he has developed and named — takes Afrobeats' rhythmic base and pushes it toward harder electronic textures, darker moods, and a club-first energy that distinguishes it from the pop-optimized mainstream.

'Calm Down' became one of the most streamed songs in the world and brought Rema to a mainstream global audience. But the Afrorave catalog — Ravage, Reason You, the Rave & Roses album — is where his artistic identity is most clearly expressed.

For Oslo's after-hours rooms, Rema's Afrorave sound is particularly well-suited. Jaeger's electronic sensibility and Blå's late-night tolerance for more challenging sounds make Oslo potentially the most receptive Scandinavian city for an Afrorave headline date.

The Oslo angle

'Calm Down' was inescapable in Oslo's Afrobeats rooms in 2023. But the Oslo selectors who were paying closer attention had been playing Rema's earlier, harder material for a year before the mainstream breakthrough. Oslo's Afrobeats audience understood the Afrorave dimension of his work earlier than most European cities.
